چکیده

The DIRAC spectrometer has been commissioned at CERN with the aim of detecting ππ atoms produced by a 24 GeV/c high intensity proton beam in thin foil targets. A challenging apparatus is required to cope with the high interaction rates involved, the triggering of pion pairs with very low relative momentum, and the measurement of the latter with resolution around 0.6 MeV/c. The general characteristics of the apparatus are explained and each part is described in some detail. The main features of the trigger system, data-acquisition, monitoring and setup performances are also given.

Experimental Status of Pionium at Cern

The experiment DIRAC 1 aims to measure the lifetime of the ππ atom (pionium) in the ground state with 10% precision. DIRAC is a magnetic double arm spectrometer and uses the high intensity 24 GeV/c proton beam of the CERN PS. Since this lifetime τ of order 10 s is dictated by strong interaction at low energy, a precise measurement of τ enables to determine strong S-wave pion scattering lengths ...

DIRAC Experiment at CERN: LIFETIME MEASUREMENT OF PIONIUM Collaboration DIRAC

The DIRAC experiment, a magnetic double arm spectrometer, aims to measure the π + π − atom lifetime with 10% precision, using the high intensity 24 GeV/c proton beam of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. Since the value of this lifetime of order 10 s is dictated by strong interaction at low energy, a precise measurement of this quantity enables to study characteristic pion parameters in detail and to...

Direct calculation of the probability of pionium ionization in the target

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is the lifetime measurement of pionium (π+π− atom). Its lifetime is mainly defined by the charge-exchange process π+π− → π0π0. Value of the lifetime in the ground state is predicted in the framework of the Chiral Perturbation Theory with high precision: τ1S = (2.9 ± 0.1) · 10−15 s. The method used by DIRAC is based on analysis of π+π−-pairs spectra with ...

The pion-pion scattering lengths from DIRAC

The scattering lengths of a two pion system are the golden magnitudes to test the QCD predictions in the low energy sector. The DIRAC (PS-212) experiment at CERN will obtain a particular combination of the S-wave isospin 0 and 2 scattering lengths by measuring the lifetime of pionium, the hydrogen-like π+π− atom. This measurement tests the accurate predictions of the Chiral Perturbation Theory....

The influence of the hadronic interaction on the pionium wave functions

The influence of the hadronic ππ interaction on the wave functions of pionium (the Coulomb bound π+π− system) at distances ≤ 10 fm is calculated for s-states with principal quantum numbers n ≤ 4. Hadronic ππ potentials are used that reproduce the scattering phase shifts of two-loop chiral perturbation theory. The pionium wave functions ψn(r) are obtained by integrating the coupled Schrödinger e...
